The Siri AI launch is official. On September 14, 2026, Apple published an Apple Newsroom announcement titled “Siri AI, a profoundly more capable and personal assistant powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence, is here” — and for once, the marketing hyperbole is attached to something that looks like a genuine rebuild. Siri has been “rebuilt from the ground up with powerful AI,” according to the announcement, and it ships inside Apple’s 2027 software releases: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27.

This is the first Siri overhaul that actually arrives under the Apple Intelligence banner. Let’s dig into what the Siri AI launch actually announced, what it changes for users and developers, and what Apple left unsaid.

What the Siri AI Launch Announced

Siri AI is available starting today, rolling out in beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish “next month.” The announcement describes an “entirely new version of Siri” — a “completely reimagined” assistant built on the next generation of Apple Intelligence, with four capability pillars:

  • Personal context understanding — Siri can surface relevant information from your messages, emails, and photos.
  • Broad world knowledge — answers on “virtually any topic,” leveraging information from across the web.
  • Onscreen awareness — Siri can answer questions about, and act on, whatever is currently on your screen.
  • More systemwide app actions — things like drafting an email from scratch or editing and sharing a set of photos.

The announcement’s own example is the clearest illustration of how these pillars chain together. Ask Siri what a family member suggested for an upcoming visit, and it can search your messages, find that they mentioned baking a family recipe together, pull the instructions from an email that the relative sent previously, and add the ingredients to your grocery list in Reminders. That’s a multi-app, multi-source, context-aware task — exactly the agentic behavior older Siri could not do.

There’s also an all-new dedicated Siri app that keeps your conversation history, synced across devices via iCloud (Siri AI is not available for users under 13). Invocation has spread across the system, too: side button or a swipe down from the Dynamic Island on iPhone, Spotlight integration and context menus (Control-click to ask about images, files, or text) on iPad and Mac, and a 3D visualization on Apple Vision Pro you can summon by looking at it.

Beyond the assistant itself, Apple Intelligence lands a wave of app-level features — new photo-editing tools in Photos, intelligent browsing in Safari, a photorealistic Image Playground, integrated Writing Tools, and systemwide automatic proofreading. Highlights below.

The Siri AI On-Device vs. Server Split

What runs on device

The announcement names Apple’s “most advanced on-device model ever” — AFM Core Advanced — which powers Siri AI’s more expressive voices (with expressiveness and pace customizable by the user) and a significantly upgraded systemwide dictation experience (automatic capitalization, punctuation, and formatting as you speak). Notably, that top-tier on-device model has a hardware floor: it’s available on iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPad (M4) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac (M3) or later with at least 12GB, and Apple Vision Pro (M5). If your device isn’t on that list, you get the new Siri, but not the most advanced on-device model and its features.

Siri AI also leans on what Apple calls the system orchestrator to tap into the Spotlight index and something called the App Toolbox — both of which, per the announcement, “work entirely on device to keep users in control of their data.” That’s a meaningful architectural statement: the personal-context retrieval layer that lets Siri search your messages and emails is anchored locally, not in the cloud.

What escalates to Private Cloud Compute

Everything heavier runs on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which the announcement says run “on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute.” The clearest documented example: the new photorealistic Image Playground is “powered by a new generative model that runs on Private Cloud Compute.” Footnotes in the announcement also reference “AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts” as one of the server-reliant features subject to limits.

Apple’s privacy framing is restated firmly: when Private Cloud Compute handles requests, “personal data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else,” and outside experts “can continue to verify this privacy promise at any time.”

One detail that will raise eyebrows

Buried in the architecture section is this line: the next generation of Apple Foundation Models is “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models for deeply integrated Apple Intelligence experiences.” An official Apple–Google joint statement (blog.google) adds the scope: a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, with Apple Intelligence continuing to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute under Apple’s privacy standards. Neither company has disclosed financial terms. But Apple naming Gemini in the architecture section of its flagship privacy-first product launch is a striking admission of how the frontier models behind Siri AI come to be.

The audio privacy story goes even further

The Watch-based Audio Intelligence features introduce Secure Exclave on the S11 chip — a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio “in complete isolation from the rest of the system, then immediately deletes it.” Apple states these features create no audio recordings, that raw audio is inaccessible even to the user and Apple, and that Live Rewind snippets and Siri Recap summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app with iCloud syncing. Siri Recap’s design completes that picture: it is built not to identify or attribute speakers, produces a summary rather than a transcript, is designed to exclude sensitive information like financial details or government-assigned identifiers, and can be toggled from Control Center. Whatever you think of always-listening features, the hardware-isolation design is the most rigorous audio privacy architecture Apple has documented to date.

What the Siri AI Launch Means for Users

Here’s the practical shortlist of what changes across your devices, all drawn directly from the announcement:

Siri AI is integrated into Spotlight on iPad and Mac, context menus systemwide, and a new Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app. Visual Intelligence — asking questions about what you see — expands to iPad (screenshot integration), Mac (a dedicated keyboard shortcut), and Apple Vision Pro.

Writing, dictation, photos. Integrated Writing Tools let you describe a draft and have Siri generate it, or describe an edit and have Siri apply it, virtually anywhere you type — and in Mail and Messages, Siri can mirror “the punctuation and tone they typically use” with each recipient. Automatic proofreading now works systemwide, “within most third-party apps.”

Photos gains three documented tools: Spatial Reframing (adjust camera perspective after the shot), Extend (expand the frame to give subjects breathing room), and an improved Clean Up for removing distractions with “more realistic infill.” On transparency: per the announcement, images generated or edited with Apple Intelligence-powered tools will become identifiable via SynthID, arriving in a software update later this year and included for most edited images depending on the edits applied.

Safari, Mail, Phone, Calendar, Shortcuts, Home. Live Rewind and Siri Recap specifically arrive in beta in late 2026.

Health (later this year). A redesigned Health app with a new Longevity tab and an Insights tab with an Apple Intelligence-generated daily summary across heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals, and cycle tracking, plus adaptive personalized guidance.

The availability fine print

Devices: Apple Intelligence in the 2027 OS releases covers iPhone 16 or later plus iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro) and M1-or-later iPads, MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) and M1-or-later Macs, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby.

  • Languages: Apple Intelligence itself supports 16 languages, but the Siri AI launch is beta-English-only, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish “next month.”
  • The EU gap: Siri AI “will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS,” nor will features that rely on it. Apple says it’s “working hard to find a path forward.” This is a repeat of the Apple Intelligence pattern — European users get the new OS without the marquee feature.

What the Siri AI Launch Means for Developers

The developer story here is more directional than detailed, but the shape is clear.

Existing integrations carry forward. Apple emphasizes that “Siri AI already works seamlessly with apps from Apple’s vast ecosystem of developers” — the examples given are texting a friend in WhatsApp and playing a book on Audible. Your existing Siri and App Intents integrations are not being thrown away; they’re being consumed by a smarter front end. And a new wave of actions is coming: Apple names three upcoming integrations explicitly — drafting an email in Microsoft Outlook, searching for a homework assignment in Notability, and adding a restaurant recommendation to Tripsy — with “soon” as the only timing given. The implication is that the set of systemwide app actions Siri AI can perform is expanding, and apps that expose rich, well-modeled actions through intents will be the ones Siri can drive.

The on-device plumbing matters. The App Toolbox that Siri AI taps into via the system orchestrator appears to be the mechanism through which app actions and app content become available to the assistant. The announcement itself documents no developer-facing API surface — but Apple has since published the developer documentation. At developer.apple.com/apple-intelligence, Apple details the integration path: the Foundation Models framework, a native Swift API giving direct access to Apple Foundation Models on device and in Private Cloud Compute — plus any third-party model conforming to the Language Model protocol — with multimodal prompts, Dynamic Profiles for swapping models and tools mid-session, and an Evaluations framework for testing. Integration with Siri AI runs through App Intents schemas: entity schemas contribute app content to the Spotlight semantic index for personal-context understanding, while intent schemas expose actions — per Apple, “with no specific phrases to define and no code changes needed as Siri’s language understanding evolves.” The View Annotations API extends on-screen awareness by mapping views to entities so users can reference and act on what’s on screen conversationally. Practical guidance in the meantime. If you maintain an app with existing Siri or Shortcuts integrations, the safest read of this announcement is: audit and enrich your intent coverage now. Siri AI’s value proposition is chaining actions across apps, and Apple’s own examples — grocery lists in Reminders, calendar events from a sports website, third-party email drafting — all assume the app side exposes granular, parameterized actions. Apps whose integrations stop at “open the app” will not benefit from the new assistant’s capabilities. Apple’s developer docs now confirm the schema path — entity and intent schemas, with no code changes required for existing integrations as Siri’s language understanding evolves — and announce no deprecations. Competitive Context: Siri AI vs. Gemini vs. ChatGPT

The honest framing: with the Siri AI launch, Apple is claiming a different lane rather than running the same race.

OpenAI and Google have spent two years shipping general-purpose cloud chat assistants and agents — a bet on cloud dependence that showed its downside in the first major synchronized AI outage. Apple’s counter-position, as documented in this announcement, is (1) deeply personal context — your messages, emails, photos, and screen — as a first-class input, (2) an on-device-first architecture with Private Cloud Compute for escalation, and (3) systemwide distribution: the assistant lives in Spotlight, the Camera app, context menus, the wrist, and Vision Pro, rather than in a single app you open.

The Gemini connection complicates the “Apple vs. Google” narrative, though: Apple Foundation Models are now explicitly described as “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models,” making the two companies simultaneous partners at the model layer and competitors at the assistant layer. The official joint statement documents the scope — multi-year, next-gen Apple Foundation Models based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute privacy maintained — but discloses no financial terms. And while ChatGPT and Gemini compete on raw model capability and web-scale knowledge, Apple’s differentiation pitch is privacy architecture plus OS-level integration. Whether Siri AI’s personal-context tricks — the recipe-from-messages scenario, onscreen awareness, conversation continuity across devices — feel magical in daily use, or merely competent, will decide whether the pitch lands. Beta-English-only rollout at launch, with the EU and China excluded initially, also hands competitors a window in two enormous markets. The Honest Caveats of the Siri AI Launch

This is a real launch — “available starting today” — but read the footnotes and the picture gets more nuanced.

It’s a beta. Siri AI is rolling out in beta, and the most advanced on-device model requires recent, high-RAM hardware (the same constraint driving Microsoft’s ready-to-code Windows 11 dev PC), so a large share of the installed base will experience a diminished version of the headline features.

The EU and China are left out — again. The EU exclusion covers Siri AI and every feature that relies on it, on iPhone, iPad, and Watch, with no timeline offered for resolution.

Usage limits are now explicit. Daily limits on server-reliant features vary by “feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors” — Apple gives no numbers. Combined with the “available for a fee in the future” line, the path is clear: the Siri AI launch is free, metered, and likely to become a paid component later.

Watch features need new hardware — with one nuance. Audio Intelligence as a category requires Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4. But the iPhone-pairing requirement and the late-2026 beta timing apply only to Live Rewind and Siri Recap, which additionally require pairing with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later (excluding iPhone 16e), and are English-only at first and excluded from the EU initially. Sound Recognition and faster Shazam need only the Series 12 or Ultra 4 itself — Sound Recognition even works when the iPhone isn’t with the user.

The open questions worth watching: What does “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models” mean technically, and how does Apple reconcile that with privacy-first branding? When will Siri AI leave beta and the five additional languages land? What will the paid tier cost, and what will free daily limits be in practice? And will the App Toolbox itself get its own developer documentation beyond the App Intents schema path — the missing piece that determines whether third-party apps become true citizens of the new Siri or just passengers?

One thing is clear: after years of Siri announcements that promised more than they shipped, Apple has shipped something first and described it second. That alone makes the Siri AI launch the most significant Siri story in years. Whether Siri AI is genuinely “profoundly more capable” is a question only weeks of beta use will answer — but for the first time in a long while, it’s a question worth asking.
